This is a contiuation from my previous post on Joker sculpture to be released in 2012. This time the turn is for the Joker action figures that are going to see the light in the upcoming year. Please note that release dates are subject to change. Here are some of those action figures to hit the shelves in the upcoming year:

Joker Co-creator Jerry Robinson Dies at 89

My friend Candiss forwarded me the sad news that Joker co-creator JERRY ROBINSON had passed away at the age of 89. Here is a transcript of the whole article.

Jerry Robinson, a pioneer of the comics form best known by fans for creating the Joker but also praised for his work as a comics historian and creator rights advocate, has died at age 89.

First word of the creator’s passing came from Christopher Irving’s Graphic NYC blog, which learned of Robinson’s death via a Facebook message from “Batman” film producer Michael Uslan. LA Times’ Hero Complex later confirmed the news.

Robinson was born in Trenton, New Jersey on New Year’s Day in 1922. At only 17 years of age, the aspiring artist was hired as an inker by Batman creator Bob Kane, and over the next several years, Robinson offered as much visual input into the character’s world and cast as his originator. Robinson co-created Robin, the Boy Wonder and is often credited as the primary influence for arch-villain the Joker, though Kane and Robinson would clash over credit for the villain’s creation in later years. The artist was soon hired away from Kane’s shop by “Batman” publisher DC/National Comics, for which he served as a staff artist, drawing many of the most striking covers of comics Golden Age.

Over the course of his early years in comics, Robinson proved a creative and social dynamo, moonlighting as a comics artist on projects such as the infamous “created in one night” issue of “Daredevil” while taking classes in Journalism at Columbia University. “I was always a political animal,” Robinson told CBR News last year. As the production of comic books wound down near the end of World War II, Robinson moved primarily to newspaper comic strips where he remained for the late ’50s, ’60s and ’70s, becoming known for Editorial illustration, political satire strips such as his long-running “Still Life With Robinson” and lush cover paintings for Broadway’s “Playbill.” The artist also served as President of both the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists (AAEC) and the National Cartoonists Society (NCS), and remains the only person to receive both honors.

In the 1970s, Robinson returned to the national spotlight as a comics historian and advocate for the rights of artists. “Starting in 1972, I curated the first comics at a fine art gallery. That was, I think, the year after, or almost simultaneously, with a show at the Louvre on comics, which I went over to see. I think that started it,” the artist recalled in a conversation with CBR earlier this year. “The following year, I was a guest curator at the Kennedy Library in Washington, where we did I think the largest show ever held on the comics. Certainly in the US. It was the size of a couple football fields and had all the genres of the comics. So it’s been a long time, but more and more universities and colleges have taken it on as a course of study, serious scholars and so forth.” That renewed interest in the medium combined with Robinson’s curatorial interests to create “The Comics” — one of the first definitive books on the strip comic artform as a whole, written by Robinson in 1974 and recently published in a new edition by Dark Horse.

Shortly thereafter, Robinson became a key figure along with artist Neal Adams in the fight to get Superman creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster proper credit and pay for their hero from DC Comics. Robinson himself saw the benefits of a corporate culture at DC and Warner Bros. become arguably more appreciative of its original creatives in recent years as he served as a paid creative consultant for the company on projects including Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight” which drew heavily on Robinson’s original stories in its portrayal of the Joker.

In recent years, Robinson rode a wave of publicity and public appearances surrounding not only the books by him and about his life, but also for his contributions to comics as a whole. He curated more exhibitions of original comics art, and last year auctioned off some of his most acclaimed original cover artwork from the Golden Age.

His art does not cease to be amazing as well as the storyline, though I must admit, I am a little hesitant as to where the Joker is heading. I’m such a traditionalist where storylines are concerned…well, we’ll see what happens. In the meantime, please enjoy the plethora of Jokers in one page…

For those out there searching frantically for more Joker statues, search no more. 2012 promises to be a good year for Joker collectors as many goodies are going to be available. I have been able to gather a summary of the new Joker statues to be released in 2012 so you can make your wish list as to which ones you would like to get and which ones you want to put in the trash (let’s admit it…not all Joker statues are made the same and though we are all Jokerholics, there are some statues that are just not at our standards). Anyways, that would be for you to decide as these nice statues are coming our way:

SIDESHOW JOKER PREMIERE STATUE AND SIDESHOW EXCLUSIVE VARIANT

This one actually, I have posted before when I reported Sideshow’s previews at SDCC this year and a later update on the figure. The good thing is that I was able to get a hold of some pics of the variant version this time. The statue, to be released late in the second quarter of 2012, captures the Clown Prince of Crime in approximately 1:4 scale, with an intricate real fabric costume that features a fully lined topcoat with pose-able tails. The figures is extremely detailed, a characteristic that has set Sideshow ahead of its competitors. This is a real work of art.
Price $349.99 (If ordered through Sideshow site which offers a Flex payment plan for those interested)

The Sideshow Exclusive variant sports a slightly different pose and a hat. ( But I personally prefer the pose in the regular Premium edition. The malicious look fits Joker well).

2. BLACK AND WHITE: LOTD #50 JOKER STATUE

This would be the third version of the Clown Prince of Crime under this collection. The honor goes to Brian Bolland’s representation of the Joker as he drew it on the cover of Legends of the Dark Knight #50. The release date is still to be determined, but the sculpture has already being showcased on NYCC (and I didn’t see it at SDCC)

3. JUST US LEAGUE OF STUPID HEROES JOKER STATUE series 2

Ok, I don’t really know where this one comes from, don’t even remember seeing a series one, but what the heck…it is another Joker sculpture coming out next year. This series will include a Batman and Robin sculptures as well, and I don’t know you guys, but this Joker reminds me too much of the version of the Clown Prince made by MAD magazine. Maybe I’m seeing things.

Here is another beautiful statue set issued by DC DIRECT this year that the Joker museum was lucky to get a hold of . It is not clear where the original concept came from, but from Joker’s attire I would say it was somewhat inspired by the showdown in IMPULSE #50, at least losely. I personally like Joker’s ‘fresh’ clothes. They are not the overused purple suit or the old straitjacket, but he sports a vest and a shirt more atone with the early 1940-50 style.

This week’s JOKER ART FOR THE MASSES comes from a commission made by renowed comic book artist JASON ALEXANDER known from the series ABE SAPIEN and POISON ELVES.

What I like most about this picture is that, similar to ALEX ROSS’ “Tango with the Devil” ,Joker and Harley are together in the picture, with Joker in the spotlight and Harley as an ornament. This in my opinion shows successfully the relationship between these two rogues. Not that I condone any of this behavior, but I imagine Joker as a man so full of himself, that nothing but himself matters. Everything else (including people) are just props for one of his plans, an ornament in his canvas of murder, but never a person…always a thing.

In here, Harley becomes an object again, a ‘table’ where Joker is supporting himself casually, smiling at the camera and ignoring Harley who stands like a doll, without an expression. Even the guns in his hands have more prominence in the picture than the poor Harley that precariously tries to fulfill her pudding’s whims. This nice piece was made in pen and ink around 2000 for a fan.

My Arkham City Deluxe Edition Goodies…

I got my Arkham City Deluxe Edition in October, and for one or other reason had not time to unwrap it and look at all the goodies inside. Finally I did this weekend and here is a summary of what you will find:

1. Nice packaging. Identified with the Batman Arkham City official logo, the box comes in a plastic casing to enclose the whole materials. All around are images of Batman, Joker and Two Face respectively

2. Once you remove the plastic casing, the box opens like a flower to reveal the beautiful Kotobukiya Batman figure. Once you remove the figure from the box, you can admire the detail of the figure in detail.

3. The bottom of the box is a drawer that contains all the ADD-ONS (Catwoman and Penguins DLC’s along with the DARK KNIGHT skin) and a BATMAN GOTHAM KNIGHT BD DVD and a download card for the ARKHAM CITY MUSIC ALBUM (Note the Gamestop Joker add-0n is on the receipt):

4. The back pocket of the box holds the SPECIAL EDITION ARKHAM CITY BOOKLET that contains images and the actual game. Remarkable are the minor rogue gallery (with art by Carlos D’ Anda)

5. Finally, there is the ARKHAM CITY CATALOG where you can find some more goodies you might want to buy directly from Rocksteady (Arkham City Rogue poster, Joker cap, Harley wave 2):

6. The Nightwing and Robin DLC’s are already available at PLAYSTATION STORE for $6.99 each. You don’t need a redemption code to get them.
