I am a Joker fanatic…there is no doubt about that, but when I see good art I am compelled to post it for everyone to enjoy. ALWAYS giving credit to sources and artists whenever possible.  This time it is a HARLEY QUINN pin-up by renowed comic book artist PETER NGUYEN.  He did this beautiful drawing of the Joker’s henchwoman as a commission for a fan in NYCC this year.

Hey guys,

noel000

The magnificent team at NEWSARAMA has nailed a fascinating interview with LEE BERMEJO (Joker GN) that highlights his latest project BATMAN: NOËL. I took the liberty of transcribing part of the whole interview done by Vanetta Rogers.  A link at the end will take you to the whole interview:

NOTE:  I posted the preview of BATMAN: NOËL that appeared on the back of some of DC’s issues this month.  SEE THE PREVIEW HERE!

For many comic fans, it’s good to know there are more creative ideas coming out of DC Comics than just the much-hyped monthly “New 52.”

One of those creative ideas is Batman: Noël, a new graphic novel that has an outside-continuity story, yet features a compelling artistic style. Set to be released on November 2nd, the book was created by Lee Bermejo, the artist who won notoriety for his hauntingly detailed work on the Brian Azzarello-penned book Joker and his ground-breaking Superman stories in Wednesday Comics.

After the success of Joker, DC gave Bermejo the creative license to write and draw his own graphic novel — something rare for artists in the age of superstar writers.

What resulted was Batman: Noël a story that borrows its structure from Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, but gives the classic story the dark edge that’s inherent in anything set in Gotham City. The “ghosts” that Batman encounters on his journey (Catwoman, Superman and Joker) may echo those from the familiar Dickens tale, but Bermejo twists the story to fit the haunted world of Gotham.

When DC revealed a few previews for the book earlier this month, it was clear that Batman: Noël was a labor of love for Bermejo, with stunning artwork that is jaw-droppingly detailed.

Newsarama talked with Bermejo — and got an exclusive Batman: Noël page from DC. And as we talked to the writer artist, we found out the artist wanted to use a more childlike theme for Batman: Noël but his artistic approach is meant to give the book its markedly grown-up depth.

Newsarama: Lee, you’d mentioned in New York original idea for Batman: Noel came out of your desire to theme a graphic novel like a kids’ book. Why?

Lee Bermejo: I just wanted to do something different than what I’d been doing. I had just come off two villain books, and even before that, I did a book called Batman Deathblow. And all these projects were very dark and serious and kind of gritty. I just wanted to try something a bit different. To do something that thematically was different too.

Nrama: But looking at the pages, this clearly isn’t a kid’s book.

Bermejo: No, no. My wife makes fun of me when I mention kids, because she says, “If you think this Batman story is for kids, you clearly don’t know kids, and it’s pretty obvious we don’t have children.”

I don’t think it’s a children’sbook. But it has visual qualities and a narrative quality that mirrors that, purposefully so.

I think there’s also something very interesting about that juxtaposition. It’s hard to imagine Batman in a children’s book. I like contrast, and I like juxtaposing things like that.

When I was a kid, like four or five years old, I was obsessed with the Batman TV show in the ’60s. And I took it totally seriously. At that age, I took it completely seriously. I didn’t get the fact that it was kind of played for laughs. I didn’t understand why my mom was rolling her eyes or chuckling.

I think there’s something kind of interesting there — to play the book seriously, but kind of wink and nod sometimes.

Nrama: And this is a play on Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. So is that where there’s a bit of a wink and a nod?

Bermejo: Sure. It’s not an adaptation; it follows its own story. It follows the structure of A Christmas Carol. And you have a narrator who’s telling you the story of A Christmas Carol and it’s open to interpretation, and he gets some parts of it wrong. But the actual story you’re following visually is its own thing.

It’s about a desperate father who has fallen on hard times, and he gets a job working for the Joker. And he quickly realizes that that’s not for him.

But Batman actually ends up using him as bait to catch the Joker. That’s how the story begins.

Nrama: Are there actually three ghosts?

Bermejo: No, none of these characters are playing the actual Dickens characters.

But you’ll see characters in the story who are analogous to the ghosts. There are characters who fit in with the roles that those ghosts play in Dickens. The “Ghost of Christmas Past” is a sequence with Catwoman. The “Ghost of Christmas Present” is a sequence with Superman, and the “Ghost of Christmas Future” is Joker.

The roles these characters play at that moment in the story help serve the same purpose that the ghosts serve in A Christmas Carol.

Nrama: Does it take place at any certain point in continuity? Like between two certain issues?

Bermejo: It doesn’t necessarily fit into any particular continuity. It’s hopefully something that any reader can pick up without having to know a ton about Batman.

I think the neat thing about these characters now is that everyone knows who Batman is. They’re familiar with the fact that he’s Bruce Wayne, and that the Joker is his arch-nemesis. They even know about Robin.

So this is a story that even someone who doesn’t know anymore than that about Batman can pick up and understand and enjoy.

Hey Jokerholics,

I found this nifty video-preview of the new GOTHAM CITY IMPOSTORS to be released early 2012 ( original one person shooterwhere up to 12 players battle for control of an unhinged Gotham City overrun by Impostors inspired by the DC Comics characters Batman and The Joker)  as it was previewed in COMIC CON, so you could take a look.  Personally, have to admit it looks funny, but I don’t know if I want to invest the money on downloading the game.  I will wait for the reviews.  In the meantime, have to say that the use of language is totally irreverent and funny, as it is the pretentions of both Jokerz and Batmanz alike that might make this game quite a trip to play.  Take a look by yourselves (costume pictures courtesy of CBR):

Last month I had posted an amazing voice over job of the KILLING JOKE by LORDJAZOR, a friend of mine who has an incredible talent to voice over Joker stories that are both enjoyable and creepy (Joker should entertain you and make you very scared at the same time).  Now I find that our friends at Comic Vine have made their own copilation as well, and had found a few gems out there.  First, I’ll recommend you check you the link I provided above to Lorjazor’s voice over. It’s going to blow your mind away.  Now see what the guys at Comic Vine found and an excerpt of the article:

The first video depicts the Joker’s monologue in ‘The Killing Joke’ in which he dissects Batman, questioning whether or not Batman had some tragic experience that led him to lead the life he lives. The monologue is presented by voice actor Patrick Girtz, whose Joker voice is spot on. He’s so good that he could probably replace Mark Hamill as the voice of the Joker now that the actor has stated he’s officially retired from performing the role.

THE KILLING JOKE MONOLOGUE (Joker voiced by Patrick Girts)

The second reenactment of ‘The Killing Joke’ is in Spanish, so for those of you that don’t speak the language it may be difficult to understand. However, even though you may not understand espanol, you can still appreciate the beautiful puppetry efforts of the ‘Teatro de Sombras.’ Below is the graphic novel adaptation of ‘The Killing Joke’ for you to enjoy.

ORIGINAL COMIC VINE ARTICLE by Sara Lima HERE!

OK, now that you’ve all enjoyed this.  Isn’t it time we have a reboot or a remake of the Killing Joke in the visual media as well?  I mean, if DC can remake Miller’s  BATMAN YEAR ONE with a ‘twist’ I’m sure that the KILLING JOKE would lend itself to a readaptation in the video format too (come on, it’s almost a quarter of a century old).  In the meantime….a plea to the people at GRAPHIC AUDIO:   since you have a DC licence, why not make an audiobook on the KILLING JOKE…maybe for the 25 year anniversary of the book? We’ll love you all if you did, you know? For ever!

With the release of ARKHAM CITY and it’s incredible (and predictable) success, Mark Hamill…the voice behind the Joker since he took the character in  1992 for Batman the Animated Series (with some exceptions like THE BATMAN animated show from WB and the direct to TV movie UNDER THE RED HOOD) bid farewell to an old friend. Here’s his latest Tweet on october 19:

“Hello/Goodbye Joker!” the Star Wars actor wrote,“I’ve enjoyed every minute behind the wheel of the  Crown Prince’s crazy car — I’m going to miss him more than I can say!!”

Though in previews tweets, he has expressed that this was Joker’s last hurrah!, but that he was not quitting as a voice actor… this leaves a very large void to fill as more DC movies in the future might decide to include the Joker as part of their cast once more.  There are are many talented actors who could leave their memorable imprint in the villain, but no one will ever take away the place that Mr. Hamill has carved himself in the history of the Batman universe.  I admit…I had hoped that Mr. Hamill would leave his characterization of Joker open for the “next perfect script” to come by, but now I understand that it is time to stand back and allow a new generation to take us to new places.

It is of this reason that I write this note.  To thank Mr. Hamill for two decades of Joker and fun chaos and mayhem.  The Jokerholics of the world bow at you and your legacy, and wish you the best in your new projects. You will always have a special place in Jokerdom…

I saw these pics in Tumblr last night and thought they were interesting. So Catwoman is not just a downloadable character but will have several skins to choose from? Intriguing.  Personally I am not a big one of the old Catwoman and prefer her most modern look (the one that Adam Hughes made popular).  Of all the older version I think these were the least I liked (especially the Tim Sale version), but the book of tastes is open for everyone.  I bring the pictures here for your own evaluation:

WB Interactive revealed more images from ARKHAM CITY and one of them is terrifying.  I’m talking about an almost totally ‘decaying’ Joker ready to pull the trigger and finish up his enemy (I’m assuming Batman). Here’s the pic:

I just saw it at their site, and I think that it is great if you like BATMAN Collectibles.  If you preorder the game ARKHAM CITY at Toys R Us, then you will get this beautiful limited edition LEGACY ARKHAM CITY 1970 BATSUIT Batman figure (Not sure, if it is with any game or the Deluxe Edition of Arkham City, probably the latter).
