Multi-Million-Dollar Commitment Will Support Three Aid Groups Working in Africa: Save the Children, International Rescue Committee and Mercy Corps

wecanbeheroesad

(January 23, 2012 – New York, NY)  DC Entertainment, home of the world’s greatest super heroes, today unveiled an unprecedented giving campaign to fight the hunger crisis in the Horn of Africa.  This multi-million-dollar commitment over the next two years will be supported across all Warner Bros. Entertainment’s and Time Warner’s businesses and feature DC Entertainment’s iconic Justice League characters, including Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, The Flash, Aquaman and Cyborg, issuing the call to action, “We Can Be Heroes.”  The announcements were made at a press conference today in New York by Barry Meyer, Chairman & CEO, Warner Bros.; Jeff Robinov, President, Warner Bros. Pictures Group; and Diane Nelson, President, DC Entertainment.

We Can Be Heroes will support the efforts of three humanitarian aid organizations working in Africa—Save the Children, International Rescue Committee and Mercy Corps—as part of the global effort to fight the current hunger crisis in the Horn of Africa.  The region is suffering its worst drought and famine in over 60 years, with 13 million in need of critical assistance and 250,000 facing starvation in Somalia alone.  Each partner organization was chosen for its track record of effective and expeditious humanitarian aid efforts in Africa.

We Can Be Heroes will be supported via promotional exposure across all of Time Warner’s divisional advertising platforms (Warner Bros., Turner Broadcasting, Time Inc., HBO), generating millions of consumer impressions and creating crucially needed awareness of this crisis worldwide.  Save the Children, International Rescue Committee and Mercy Corps will equally share a corporate donation of at least $2 million over the next two years comprised of cash donations, employee matching funds and consumer matching funds.

“Warner Bros. has a long history of corporate philanthropy and outreach, and this campaign proudly continues that tradition,” said Meyer.  “We are a global company, and this is a global issue.  By marshalling our expertise in consumer and fan engagement and creating global awareness, we hope we’re able to inspire others to join us in becoming ‘heroes’ and make a difference in the Horn of Africa.”

The Justice League characters were chosen by DC Entertainment both for their global recognition as well as their demonstration of strength in unity and numbers.  The campaign’s graphic identifier features the iconic Justice League characters—Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, The Flash, Aquaman and Cyborg—outlined in silhouette against the African continent.  Each of these characters is a super hero in his or her own right, but when they band together as the Justice League, they become an unstoppable force for good and right in the universe—a key message of the We Can Be Heroes campaign. While many individuals may feel powerless to effect change on their own, as part of a global campaign such as this, their efforts, combined with those of other donors, can create a world of change.

A key launch element of We Can Be Heroes is the campaign’s website, www.WeCanBeHeroes.org.  Here, consumers can make donations which DC Entertainment will match 100 percent (up to $1 million in donations), purchase specially branded merchandise, with 50 percent of the purchase price going to fight the hunger crisis via We Can Be Heroes[1],  sign up for newsletters and updates, and join the We Can Be Heroes online community.  The site will also feature information on each of the partner organizations and updates on current conditions in the Horn of Africa.

“This campaign goes straight to the heart of our core competency, as Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment both have a rich legacy of telling socially relevant, compelling stories with characters embraced by global audiences,” said Robinov.  “The fact that we’re able to take what we do and use it to raise awareness—and inspire action—around a cause as important as this is gratifying.  With the support of the entire Studio and our Time Warner sister companies, this campaign, like the DC Comics super heroes, will make a great impact on an important issue.”

“The members of the Justice League are an international team of super heroes beloved by a broad range of fans, including men and women, young and old.  This makes them the perfect ‘spokescharacters’ for this campaign,” said Nelson.  “Their dedication to social justice and commitment to band together to defend the helpless brilliantly supports the ideals of the We Can Be Heroes campaign.  The hunger crisis in the Horn of Africa is something we can reverse if we all work together.  I’m proud and grateful we’re able to harness the power and standing of the DC Comics brand and iconic characters as well as for the support from both Warner Bros. and Time Warner that has allowed us to pursue this unprecedented initiative.”

“This is a tragic situation affecting millions and millions of people.  Everyone has the ability to be a part of the solution and efforts such as We Can Be Heroes help bring us closer to that goal,” said Dr. Jill Biden, who visited refugees in Kenya in August and has worked to raise awareness of the crisis.  “I commend the efforts of DC Entertainment, Warner Bros. and other organizations who are using their global reach to help raise awareness of the crisis.”

Just a little note to let you Jokerholics of the world know that the DC’s new line of LEGO TOYS are finally here! Major department and toy stores have received their shipments of the DC SUPERHEROES LINE of LEGO KITS, and they are going out fast…

I went to Walmart and bought the JOKER FIGURE  (#4527, $14.95) and the BATTLE OVER GOTHAM  (#6863, $34.95) sets, but I also found the Superman vs Power Armor Lex, Green Lantern and Batman figure sets,as well as the Batcave, Batmobile and Two face Chase, Catwoman Catcylce City Chase sets.  The selection was great at Walmart, but I saw that people were already snatching the sets like they were gold nuggets.

For me this will be quite the experience. As a kid I never had a chance to play with LEGOS, and this will be the first time I will be assembling them.  Wish me luck and let’s see how it goes…I will upload pics when I’m done.In the meantime,

WHAT ARE YOU JOKERHOLICS WAITING FOR?  GO TO THE STORES NOW!!!!

Purchase your sests before they dissapear from the shelves.  Here are pics of the sets being sold at WALMART

I know that I’m a little behind posting on this blog, but I’m preparing some new departments, revamping the museum, writing some and then keeping my full time veterinary job and personal matters….WHEEW! I wish I could juggle all these better, but fear not…

Here are the regular art posts again!!

This one I really don’t remember when I got it, but it was posted in COMIC ART FANS.  The pencils are rendered by Spanish artist OSCAR JIMENEZ (Flash, JLA and Chronicles of Wormwood: the Last Battle among others) and colors are by Rafael Sandoval.  I personally like the piece because it presents a Joker doing what he likes most:  PLAYING WITH HIS TOYS.

Instead of presenting a psychotic Joker shedding blood around him, Jimenez presents the playful side of Joker.  The Clown is somehow being able to turn Batman and Robin against each other and he is rejoicing on it. The Clown Prince of Crime is the ringmaster, great puppeteer tweaking, twisting, and manipulating the world to his demented whim, just to rejoice on the chaos it creates….this is Joker’s essence.

I personally love the theme, and the coloring definitely helps create the mood.  Now, with any more delay…JOKER WITH BATMAN AND ROBIN

It was probably inspired by this BOB KANE piece of art:

Hey Jokerholics.

I know many of you are waiting to see what new things are going to be done with Harley in the 2-issue story arc that should reveal her new origin according to the New 52 creed of revamping old classics.  Though I have not been impressed by much of the 52 launch, this peeks my curiosity.  I always wanted to see Harley reinvented, refreshed.  She is no longer the BTAS cute innocent henchman of the Clown Prince of Crime.  She is dangerous, lethal,  and ruthless as the man she claims to love.  Let’s see if they can keep up the pace with this lady Clown and finally give the character the treatment she deserves.

Now friends, enjoy the preview of some art along with some hints of things to come. This appeared on the back of BIRDS OF PREY #5,  CATWOMAN #5 and other 52 titles.  I personally like how they have treated Joker in the flashback scenes.  Can’t wait to see these in color…

“Brilliant, driven people are already a little crazy.” laughs SUICIDE SQUAD writer Adam Glass. “What we do with Harley Quinn is show the tipping point.”  THE HUNG FOR HARLEY QUINN is a two-part meat grinder in SUICIDE SQUAD #6 and #7. Revealing among other things–the origin of Harley Quinn.

harleyjoker01

“Dr. Harleen Quinzel is a brilliant psychiatrist –the best in the world– and she’s going to prove it by being the shrink who ‘breaks’ the Joker.  At least, that was her plan,” says Glass.  “What we see is how it all went terribly wrong, it’s a personal story.  Harley’s early life, what shaped her as an adult and, ultimately, what’s the one thing the Joker does that breaks her to his will.”

harleyjoker03

While this is very much a Harley story, the Squad doesn’t take a back seat to anyone.”  Glass continues. “Along the why King Shark has been acting so strange, the identity of the two female members (familiar faces to New 52 fans) and how Savant — who “died” in issue #1 could possibly be on the team.  And  will we learn the truth behind Harley’s bone-white skin? “Yeah…, finished Glass, “but remember I can only promise you a good story, not a happy ending.”

That is what I found out as I was reading SUICIDE SQUAD #04 and #05 (yeah, I know I’m a little behind in my reading) and have to say that though I was not impressed with the ‘new’ Harley, this looks promising. This new Harley is nothing like its BTAS or comic book counterpart (though the one on Batman #663 was pretty close), because that one though obviously in love with her pudding, willing to go the extra mile for him, was never so…RUTHLESS.

This Harley can kill with ease…something that comes in handy when your boyfriend is a psychotic mass murderer like the Joker.  More than once, she has shown that she can take whomever stands on her way, but how far is she REALLY willing to go?  That is the question that I think would define Harley in future issues as the new story arc stared in issue #4 with Harley’s realization that Joker might be dead. And we finally have a taste of what Harley is capable of in issue #5 when she is the brains behind the riot. It really doesn’t matter that that many people die as long as it serves her purpose of providing a smoke screen for her escape.

The look in her eyes is foretelling…and you can almost taste the irony in her words:

“Focus, yeah…Cosider me VERY focused right now.”

She is indeed focused, but no longer on the mission at hand but the news of Joker’s death, and you can see her interest shifting.  She needs to find the truth about Joker’s whereabout.  I personally don’t like the idea of DC Editors keeping these two coming at each other again and again, but I can understand the boost in sales when they do.  Everybody loved the BTAS Harley, always by her Joker and exploring this relationship, but on the lights of the new 52 reboot Harley is quite differnt and more interesting as a character.  I like her taking the initiative in the nearly-sex scene between her and Deadshot.  She obviously has eyes for other men rather than just her pudding, and I’m glad to see that explored.

And we finally have a taste of what Harley is capable of in issue #5 when she is the brains behind the riot. It really doesn’t matter that that many people die as long as it serves her purpose of providing a smoke screen for her escape. Oh, and look how she puts a smile on everybody’s faces as her trademark.  Can’t wait for issue #6…..

Babies have an incredible appeal. If you don’t believe me, how many times have you stopped to look and googoo daa babies out there?  Well, with that in mind, what if you combined a cute babie with a murderous psychopath?  But of course…

A CUTE MURDEROUS PSYCHOPATH!!

and that is exactly what the people at WOLRDBOX has done with with the JOKER figure LAKOR BABY. Weird concept and I admit, the whole thing is kind of creepy, but … Just look at him and tell me he’s not also cute (in a twisted way)!

Again, our friends at CBR have teased us with art from upcoming projects. After so long a wait, we finally have a chance to enjoy some art from GEOFF JOHNS nd GARY FRANK’S graphic novel:  BATMAN EARTH ONE  due on May this year.  Much is the anticipation for this project whose intention as explained by CBR news team “The original concept of the line was to create a series of books following the European tradition of releasing serialized chapters of a story in graphic novel form”.

This is what Geoff Johns told CBR about the project: “The size of the books, gives us an ability to really dive into these characters and explore them, especially Bruce Wayne.  When we meet him and who he is and where he goes, is going to be something that is a bit different from what people are used to.”

I personally read the first graphic novel of this series SUPERMAN EARTH ONE and not being a Superman fan myself, I found the story very well written and quite entertaining.  Even felt that it had ended too soon.  I just wanted…more.  Geoff Johns is a well known writer, having given life to most of the new DC Universe with stories like GL’s BLACKEST NIGHT and his current reinvention of AQUAMAN for tne new 52, so I anticipate his take on an iconic character like Bruce Wayne/Batman to be as refreshing.  Gary Frank provides the pencils and they do not disappoint.  This might be along his best work yet.

For a preview, I took the liberty of bringing the images from CBR’s report on the graphic novel, but provide a link to the original article.  In the meantime, enjoy some very dramatic GARY FRANK art from BATMAN EARTH ONE:

Hey gang,

DC BLOGS have been nice enough to get us a page of finished interior art as well as the creative process from CHIP KIDD’s graphic novel DEATH BY DESIGN.  The GN is due in May 2, but here you can start enjoying Kidd’s Joker art. This is what CBR says:

Set during the construction and development of Gotham City and influenced by architectural design of the 1930s, the graphic novel showcases the process of building not only a city, but also a hero and a villain. Now, via its blog, The Source, DC has revealed a first look at the steps of Dave Tayor’s artistic process from sketches to finished artwork.

The generous guys at DC BLOGS even included the creative process for the creation of this particular piece of comic art.  Please click on the thumbnails to enjoy

Hey Jokerholics.

I just was browsing for some research for the JOKER MUSEUM and accidentally found this Joker-Harley kit….and my jaw dropped.  It’s Alex Ross’ famous TANGO WITH EVIL! The statue is a commission made in 2007 and the artist is Erick Sosa.  It was posted by HERE BE MONSTERS at www.statueforum.com.  It is just amazing and don’t know if there are any kits available for sale but if there are…I need to get myself one so if anyone is selling, please contact me to talk some business.

In the meantime,  look at the amazing work on this piece…
