killingjoke_ani_byphaWho’s not excited to hear the incredible duo of Mark Hamill and Kevin Conroy once more in the retelling of what is probably the most cherished Joker/Batman story of all times?  The dream is coming slowly true as production continues.  Mark Hamill, just teasing fans, tweeted us a first look at what the clash of the two enemies would look like in a production still from the movie.  It is so reassuring that not only the best voices are involved in this project but that the animators did their best to preserve Brian Bolland’s spirit.  Thanks guys.  Waiting for the film to be released later this year… here it is…

While checking the internet, saw that COMIC BOOK RESOURCES announced that DC has signed a new voice for their collaboration with LEGO for a BATMAN MOVIE to be released in  February, 2017. Joker’s new voice for the movie will  be done by (Hangover) Zach Galifianakis.

And it took me by surprise. WHY?

NewJokervoice

Well, it is obvious for those of you (me included) who had played the LEGO BATMAN games that the Joker was voiced by Clown Prince veteran Christopher Corey Smith.  His voice acting, to my taste, was excellent, being both funny and intense (by this I mean that it sounded as if he “felt” the character and enjoyed it).  After successfully voicing the Clown in  two video games and a DVD movie I really believed that Cory Smith had become synonymous with the LEGO Joker (much like Mark Hamill became synonymous with the BATS Joker).  Or was he really?

On behalf of Mr. Galifianakis I have to say, he is a  voice actor on his own right with an extensive resume, especially having voiced The Simpsons’ Lucas Bortner  and Puss in Boots’ Humpty Alexander Dumpty , but does he have what it takes to voice Joker?  * scratches head*  True, this is just a LEGO movie, not the Killing Joke or anything, no biggie…right? Well, yes…but there are voice pairings out there that just do not work (I’m still trying to reconcile Brent Spiner’s voicing Joker in Young Justice which made my head spin, though it was probably most likely due of the poor dialogue that was written for the character to begin with).

I will stop now.

Truth is I have no frame or reference to throw an opinion on the subject.  Just wanted to express how I felt about Corey Smith not being a part of this new LEGO Batman movie, but I hate to pass judgement before hearing Galifianakis’ Joker, so… I will just sit back and wait for the first glimpses of his voice acting that will surely start appearing sometime next year.  Hopefully it will be a refreshing change….*crosses fingers*

And it was about FRIGGIN’ time DC!!!

Yes, it was a nice day in 2004 when I saw the announcement in my PREVIEWS catalog of a new Jim Lee/ Lee Bermejo/ Camuncoli project involving Joker…and then it got cancelled.

I had attended comic book conventions (SDCC and NYCC as well as Orlando MEGACON) and try to inquire about the project…nobody knew what I was talking about or those that knew said it was in indefinite hiatus…so I waited. And waited. And waited.

And today I was ecstatic when I read on COMIC BOOK RESOURCES that FINALLY the series is going to see print.  YES!  The First issue of the series is scheduled to be released on NOVEMBER  2015 and will include (as of today)  alternate covers by Jim Lee (1:100 sketch Cover),  and Lee Bermejo. The original layouts of the series are done by Giuseppe Camumcoli and top comic book artists will work in each of the 4 issues of the miniseries.  The first issue is made by JIM LEE!  Here is the premise:

The impossible has happened and Batman is on the verge of being taken down by an enemy he cannot defeat: a virus for which there is no cure! And the only hope for his salvation is The Joker! Who infected Batman, what does the Clown Prince of Crime know, and how will the Dark Knight get that information? Together, the enemies crisscross Europe, desperate to find answers before time runs out.

Yep, I might not like his tattoos or his grill or even his electric green hair, but one thing that Jared Leto’s Joker can do real good is dress well.  This new version has some serious sense of fashion, keeping his bright colored palette while adding a modernistic touch to the Clown Prince of Crime’s wardrobe.  So far from what I have seen of this Joker I do like the way he dresses…sadly this might be the only thing I like of him…for now.

tumblr_nncbxi0hcg1tmmk43o1_400_zpsuc3lwnadCBR has reported that actor Jared Leto, who plays the Joker in the upcoming SUICIDE SQUAD movie to be released next year, started to get into character with his alter ego the Clown Prince of Crime WAY BEFORE he was on the set.  He did so by welcoming some of the cast member with strange gifts.  Here is a copy of  article

It’s now a bit of a tradition — if you play the Joker on film, you have to really get into character. Following in Jack Nicholson and Heath Ledger’s footsteps, Jared Leto — who will debut as Joker in 2016’s “Suicide Squad” — has wasted no time slipping into the mindset of the Clown Prince of Crime. In an interviewwith E! Online, Leto’s “Squad” co-star Adam Beach revealed that the Academy Award-winning actor greeted all of his castmates with some gruesome gifts.

“He sent Harley [Margot Robbie] a nice love letter with a black box with a rat in it — a live rat,” revealed Adam Beach, who is reportedly playing Slipknot in the film. “It was beautiful. Then he sent bullets to Will [Smith] with a letter.”

Since “Suicide Squad” began filming before Leto arrived on set, the actor apparently felt the need to assure his co-stars that he was preparing for the role. This involved sending a “dead hog” to the set, addressed to everyone, with an accompanying video message featuring himself in full Joker mode.

“Basically, what he said was, ‘Guys, I can’t be there but I want you to know I’m doing my work as hard as you guys,'” said Beach. “The video he showed is in character. It blew our minds away. Then we realized that day, this is real.”

Beach went on to talk about Leto’s specific rendition of the Joker. “He encompasses this beautiful man and he shows it in, ‘Hello, how are you?,’ but in an instant, he goes to psychotic behavior where you’re in fear. But you love him because he has both of those genuine sides.”

“Suicide Squad” opens on August 5, 2016.

I don’t know…maybe there is hope for this Joker portrayal after all.  I mean if an Oscar winning actor is so invested in his character to do this, maybe we will see a successful characterization of everybody’s favorite psychopathic Clown…ONLY TIME WILL TELL

219e0e8f76c44732556765f51fb7606eWell, the movie might be done with the chase scenes and some other interesting little surprise scenes that have flooded the INSTAGRAM and YouTube pages but as director DAVID AYER revealed in a recent communication that in spite of the great chase scenes through Toronto streets, this is just a GLIMPSE of what is to come.  Without any further details, he announced that the movie will go dark now as it continues production and that the fans should be alerted that the movie’s surprises have not been spoiled…I just wonder what could be more wonderful than Joker’s ride and more horrendous that that ugly bat trying to vandalize the  Clown’s car, but I trust Mr. Ayer.

David Ayer ‏@DavidAyerMovies

Well we survived the streets. Time to go dark now. Remember, only the tiniest glimpse has been exposed. Our surprises are intact.

And… I personally believe these supposed “leaks” are nothing more than free publicity to increase the fans anticipation for the film..

NOTE:  Still…I am not so sure about the Joker’s look.  I just hope that this is a killer plot with a killer performance by an ACADEMY AWARD WINNER that is going to allow the fans look over those hideous tattoos…YUCK!

I might not be happy with the Joker’s look, but that does not mean I am not excited about the movie as a whole (I mean, it does have an incredible cast in it and it is full of villains. I can’t ask for anything else).  So here are a few new videos that have been popping out from the net of Joker, his car, the Batmobile and Harley Quinn.

Hey Jokerholics,
I know I’m kind of late posting this since you all probably saw the Jared Leto tease of Joker’s new look, but I am going to use this time to just give you all my personal  and humble opinion about the whole issue.   In reality it is very simple…

First take a look at it:

219e0e8f76c44732556765f51fb7606e

1.  Idea of a Joker with tattoos…a very promising concept indeed

  • Yes, I mean, really.  Why can’t we imagine a Clown Prince of Crime who does like tattoos? We all know the Joker is crazy, but he can also be a trendy dude, can’t he? He probably LIKES tattoos.  Let’s remember what Frank Miller tried to do in his ill fated collaboration with Jim Lee Batman and the Robin the Boy Wonder.  His Joker was not only a romantic psycho in the series, but he wore a rather large red dragon tattoo on his back for Christ sake!  Talking about making a statement Mr. Miller!  Yes the whole series was an epic failure for the most part (except for Jim Lee’s magnificent art), but it was a sincere try to reinvent a Clown that has so many different incarnations already.
  • Also you have to consider, after Heath Ledger’s memorable portrayal  of the Joker in the DARK KNIGHT movie, there is not much room to outdo that performance or refresh the character.  The Nolanverse Joker was the most realistic form of the Clown Prince of Crime to date, but if you wanted a more classical view of the Joker, there was always the Jack Nicholson’s Clown portrait  of BATMAN 1989, and if you wanted something even campier… well, there was the Batman 1966 Joker portrayed by Cesar Romero. Reinventing the Joker after these performances was becoming harder and harder with any new incarnation.  New venues had to be explored and why not a tattooed Joker for once.  It looked like a nice thought experiment.

2.  The nature of Suicide Squad Joker’s tattoos:

  • That is kills the dream for me.  Yes, a tattooed Joker would have been a nice refreshing concept, but the selection of the tattoos for this Clown Prince of Crime is just an overkill…and Black and white?  Come on, Joker is a colorful villain, and if he could only select one color it would not be black…it would be purple (I can’t tell, but maybe the tattoos are made in dark purple ink?).  OK. Let’s analyze those tattoos for a moment:
    • Large Jester skull and playing cards:  really, what kind of meaning does this have for Joker.  I’ve been trying to put myself in the state of mind of the Clown in an effort to find a logic for this tattoo. It is so cliché. Skull Jesters and playing cards are all over the place, all over the internet, in decals, in bumper stickers… it is just a common motif and we all know that Joker is not a common guy.  His psyche is totally warped, abnormal, disturbed, twisted.  The last thing he wants is to be like the common folk.  So why would he select such a common image like that?  Beats me.  I personally don’t think he would wear a large skull jester in his chest, he will find something more shocking and disturbing.
    • HAHAHA tattoos:  Actually this is more like a Joker thing, something that Joker would probably wear in his skin, but the pattern is so uniform, and absorbing.  I think that Joker would have gone for something a little more unusual ( the pattern on his shoulder was promising).  His laughter is chilling and scary, not just a happy laughter and if he would decide to wear it, I think he would like to do something unusual about it.
    • The Big smile on his forearm:  OK, this to me was a total waste of piece of skin art, until I saw a little unknown photomanipulation of Joker using this tattoo to exaggerate his rather unremarkable grin (remember, this Joker does not have Ledger’s scarred grin.  Actually he seems to have a normal mouth with a lipstick enhanced smile).  Neat concept idea for a use of the tattoo, but I still see that that it misses the mark as a whole.  To me it looks more like a tribute to Miller’s Joker from DARK KNIGHT RETURNS graphic novel (if you have not seen it, there is a panel in that graphic novel with a similar smile when Joker finally recovers his purpose after seeing Batman on TV). To me that is almost totally useless tattoo.
    • “Damaged” tattoo on the forhead:  OK, so this is like the most ridiculous choice of a tattoo for the Clown Prince of Crime.  If maybe you could make all the other tattoos “kind of work” this one would just throws any possibilities out the window.  What the hell does Joker need to advertise that he has a messed up head?  It makes absolutely no sense. Even the placing on the forehead makes it an ever poorer choice  for a tattoo.  Please Mr. David Ayer and Suicide Squad editors, delete this tattoo in postproduction.  It is just annoying, like that large hairy mole on the face of your best friend.  You can’t stop staring at it, and miss every thing else the character is trying to do.

3.  The Joker’s grill

  • What the hell is the reasoning behind this.  I don’t think anybody knows, but instead of just being a trendy piece of mouth jewelry, this looks like Joker has not brushed his teeth in weeks.  Weird, and I personally am not too fond of it.  BUT…I love the explanation that has been running around that he’s using the grill because he’s covering the teeth that Batman had knocked out in previous fights.  It’s a possibility and makes the choice of the grill, kind of reasonable, less shocking  but not any less attractive.

4.  MY CONCLUSION

  • This Joker conception is faulty in may aspects of his looks.  It is to me a hybrid between being cartoony (electric green hair anyone, pinky ring?), ridiculous and realistic.  It will probably take ALL OF Jared Leto’s Oscar winning skills to make me bypass all the issues I have with this portrait.    He better make this Joker more memorable than Ledger’s Clown if he wants this new interpretation to really work in the big screen (but then I know that also depends on how well the screenwriters wrote him in the plot.  In the meantime, I will just sit and wait until I see more Joker action and the movie, and hope that DC makes me regret what I am about to say, but…

I LOVE JOKER, BUT REALLY… I DON’T THINK THIS IS GONNA WORK.
