Batman #1 (Spring 1940):”The Joker” and “The Return of the Joker”

  • The Joker, a grinning Clown faced killer, announces his crimes over the radio, threatening to kill several men and steal valuable items from them.  When he is successful, the underworld is angry that he has upstaged them.  Brute Nelson,  a gangster, plans a trap for the Joker, but the Joker avoids it and kills Nelson.  Batman, having taken an interest in the case is nearly killed himself when he attempts to pursue he Clown Prince.

Batman #2 (Summer 1940) “The Joker Meets Cat-Woman”

  • Joker, having survived his last encounter with Batman is taken to the hospital, but the Crime Syndicate Inc, breaks him out to make him his leader. Batman and Robin arrive at the hospital and find the Cat-woman outside.  She is planning to steal some jewels, but gives information about the joker.  Batman busts the Crime Syndicate and Robin trails Cat-woman. Joker also tries to steal the jewels, but is taken out when Batman arrives. Joker is left for dead in a burning building while Cat-w0man dives into the river from the Batplane to avoid capture.

Detective Comics #45 (November 1940) “The Case of the Laughing Death”

  • Batman stops a museum robbery and follows one of the crooks to a music store where he loses it.  After returning to the store, Batman finds suspicious men leaving the palce. Following the man, to another robbery where Joker steals the loot while Batman  battles them.  Batman follows Joker and learns he is the owner of the music store, thus double crossing his own men. Joker traps Batman ,but after escaping, the Crusaser trails his foe to a ship carrying a jade buddah.  Joker tries to steal the item, Batman stops him and Joker falls to his apparent death in the ocean.

Batman #4 (Winter Issue 1941): “The Case of the Joker’s Crime Circus”

  • Joker forms a gang based on the circus.  They perform for the rich families to case the victim’s houses. Batman makes the connection with a string of robberies and arrives at another performance of the crime circus.  Joker escapse back to his hide-out, but Batman follows him there.  Batman escapes a trap, then throws the Joker down a long shaft to his apparent death.

Batman #5 (Spring Issue 1941) “The Riddle of the Missing Card”

  • Joker returns with a gang of smugglers. Together they start a criminal operation aboard a gambling ship.  Bruce Wayne boards the ship in search of clues. When the Joker discovers Bruce watching, the crook throws him overboard.  Bruce survives and returns with Robin. Together they break up the gang  when Joker double-crosses his own partners. Joker again appears to die when Robin hurls him into the water from atop a lighthouse.

Batman #7 (October-November 1941): “Wanted: Practical Jokers!”

  • The Joker recruits several practical jokers and blackmails them into working for him.  The pranksters pull pranks which distract the police and Batman from Joker’s real crimes. The Jester can’t resist gloating through and gives Batman a clue to his next job.  After solving the riddle, Batman stops Joker, but the Joker escapes again falling to his apparent death.

Batman #8 (December 1941-January 1942): “The Cross Country Crimes”

  • Batman is summoned to Washington by the FBI. As he is congratulated for his fight against crime, Joker appears and shoots the FBI chief. Batman and Robin then persue the Clown across the country.  Joker’s robberies follow a pattern which spells his name, Batman realizes the pattern and is able to predict the next crime. He finally traps his nemesis and sends him to Alcatraz.

Detective Comics #60 (February 1942): “Case of the Costumed Clad Killers”

  • Gotham is struck by a series of robberies where the crooks are costumed in police and fireman unifirms. Batman suspects the Joker is behind the crimes and is confirmed when the Jester leaves him a clue.  Unable to track Joker, Batman sets him a trap abouard a ship. Robin is thrown overboar during a scuffle and believed dead. Batman is tied up, but he escapes and follows Joker to his hideout.  Robin has survived and joins in, and between the two crusaders finish off the villain

Batman #9 (February-March 1942): ” The Case of the Lucky Law-Breakers”

  • After escaping Alcatraz, Joker begins a spree of bank robberies.  His gang, receive the  money in prize winnings from reputable sources because Joker has threatened the organizers. Batman and Robin plan a trap for Joker, but care captured themselves.  They escape  a deathtrap and stop the gang, but the Joker gets away.

Detective Comics #62 (April 1942): “Laugh, Town, Laugh!”

  • Comedian Happy Hanson dies and wills all his money to 5 comedians who must solve clues to obtain the prize.  The Joker escapes jail and purues the prize too starting by killing  the comedians and stealing their clues. Batman and Robin try to save the comedians, but Joker eventually gets all of the clues and locates the fortune. Batman prevents the theft after escaping one of Joker’s death traps and finishes off the Clown.

Detective Comics #64 (June 1942): “The Joker Walks the Last Mile”

  • The Joker turns himself in, confess his crimes, is tried and executed in the electric chair. His henchmen manage to get his body and revive him and when the Joker returns, Batman can’t arrest him because legally he already paid for his crimes. While pretending to be a good citizen, his gang continues.  Joker sets a trap to make Batman commit a crime and almost gets him arrested. However, Batman shows proof of the Joker’s new crimes and the Clown escapes and goes into hiding.

Batman #11 (June-July 1942):”The Joker’s Advertising Campaign”

  • Joker escapes jail (?) and begins placing advertisements in the newspaper. The ads assist him in his crimes and taunts Batman. When Joker strikes at a magic show, Robin follows him and is nearly killed. Batman is forced to save his partner, then track down the Joker on his own. When he finally catches up, he puts Joker in the hospital with injuries.

Batman #12 (August-September 1942): “The Wizard of Words!”

  • Joker begis a series of crimes which involve slang words taken literally.  After painting the town red with red paint, Joker breaks into a back that was painted.  The paint contains acid that allows him entry.  Batman deciphers Joker’s plans and begins chasing Joker around town.  The two end up locked in battle atop a blimp. Joker plummets to his apparent death, ending the chase.

Batman #13 (October-November 1942″Comedy of Tears!”

  • Joker steals several signatures belonging to notable citizens of Gotham. He then uses them to forge documents which allow him to commit greateer crimes. Batman and Robin chase the joker all over town and finally bait a trap by letting Joker steal Dick Grayson’s autograph book. The trap is set, and Batman finally apprehends his adversary.

Detective Comics #69 (November 1942): “The Harlequin’s Hoax!”

  • Joker sends strange gifts to 4 businessmen and start robbing them.  Batman finds out Joker is blackmailing the businessmen with a secret that involve an explosion where people died and the men were blamed.  Batman exposes the Joker’s plan but the Clown escapes before he is captured.

Detective Comics #71 (January 1943″A Crime a Day!”

  •  While offering a lecture in clue detection, Batman belittles the Joker for leaving clues behind his crimes that always lead to his capture. Joker finds out and sets out in a new crime spree, but this time Batman has a hard time figuring out the pattern until he deciphers an important clue.  He then uses the clue to set a trap for Joker and end the crime spree.

Batman #16 (April-May 1943) “The Joker Reforms!”

  • First Alfred
  • Collected in Batman: The Dark Knight Archives Vol. 4 HC (2003), and Batman Chronicles Vol. 9 TPB (2010)
  • Joker and his men escape Gotham after stealing a fortune in jewels. The plane crashes and Joker goes down with the plane after his men parachute to safety. From the crash, Joker gets amnesia, he finds the jewels and turns them over to the police claiming to be Ed Smith.  Batman and Robin trail Joker , learn of his amnesia and play along.  Joker’s henchen try to attack Batman, but Joker helps the Crusaders proving he’s honest.  Joker eventually remembers where the rest of his loot is hidden. He intends to turn it over to the police, but his henchmen jump him. Batman and Robin save him, but a blow to the head resotres the Joker’s memory. Batman arrests the Joker and his henchment and recovers the stolen loot.

Detective Comics #76 (June 1943) “Slay ’em with Flowers!”

  • Joker takes over a flower shop and starts selling flowers to the reach, but inside the arrangements, chlorophorm is hidden to knock the victims allowing the Joker to rob them. Batman sets a trap for Joker using his alter ego Bruce Wayne and once the Jester robs him, Batman follows the Joker to his hideout where he uses the Clown’s own gas to knock him out.

Batman #19 (October-November 1943) “The Case of the Timid Lion!”

  • Joker is framed for putting men with animal names into cages.  Mr. Lyon receives a threat getting a bodyguard but he is the one behind the crimes. Joker gets angry over the frame-up and follows Lyion. Batman also follows Lyon and runs into the Joker and Lyon escapes.  During their next encounter Joker captures Batman and Lyon and puts them into a lion cage. batman escapes and Joker and Lyon are apprehended

Batman #20 (December 1943-January 1944) “The Centuries of Crime!”

  • With help from two con artists, Joker plans to rob two wealthy men. He tells both men that his friends have invented a time machine.  Percival Pruitt, an investor is the first to fall for the gimmick while the Joker second victim is bank robber Kid Globe Mixter who uses the machine to escape Batman. Batman, following Pruitt reaches the Joker’s lair only to be captured along with Robin by Joker.  Both crooks don’t like what they see in the future and pay the Joker to take them back, but instead of sending them to the present he sends them to the past. Meanwhile Batman and Robin escapes and discover they are in a futuristic movie, not the future. They locate Pruitt and Mixter and rescue them from Joker then apprehend the Clown and his men.

Detective Comics #85 (March 1944) “The Joker’s Double”

  • Mr. Heart, a country club owner disguises himself as the joker and kills two of his bridge partners. Joker finds out and angered by the impersonator, tries to help Batman and Robin track down the imposter. As Joker’s double strikes again with his other bridge partner, Joker and Batman has tracked them there.  Batman arrests the imposter while the Joker escapes having defended criminal reputation

Batman #23 (June-July 1944): “The Upside Down Crimes!”

  • Inspired from a funhouse, Joker comes with the idea of Upside-down Crimes. After stealing a precioud gem, Joker captures Batman and the Batplane. After a trap, Batman recovers the gem and leaves the Joker for the police.  Before the police arrives, Joker escapes continue his criminal spree.  Following his enemy’s clues to a party with people are dressed up as movie stars Batman sets off a trap, capturing the Joker when he strikes and send him back to prison.

Detective Comics #91 (September 1944): “The Case of the Practical Joker”

  • Joker is the victim of practical jokes in prison. Batman disguises himself and gets in the prison to investigate and finds out Joker has been playing the practical jokes on himself to cover an escape attempt.  Despite Batman’s attempts, Joker escapes and start a new crime spree.  Batman deduces the Joker MO, by something the Clown said in prison and sets him up.  As Joker tries to escape, this time he is apprehend by the police.

Batman #25 (October-November 1944″Knights of Knavery”

  • Story reprinted in Wanted: The World’s Most Dangeroud Villains #2 (Sept/Oct 1972), Greatest Batman Stories Ever Told HC (1988), Greatest Batman Stories Ever told TPB (1989)  and  Batman: The Dark Knight Archives vol. 6 HC (2010)
  • After being locked up together, Joker and Penguin debates what crook is the best.  They finally escape and set to put their talents to the test and solve the rivalry. The Batman devises a plan using emeralds as bait. After falling in Batman ‘s trap and barely escaping, Joker and Penguin make a short lived alliance that proves very profitable. Even Batmand and Robin are captured by the two crooks, but Batman works each criminal against each other and at the end escape and capture them. Once in prison, both Joker and Penguin promise never to work together again.

Batman #28 (April-May 1945) “Shadow City!”

  • Millionaire Bet-a-Million Bannister goes to a secret part of Gotham City called Shadow City to gamble. Once Bannister finds out Joker owns the casino, he threatens to tell the police and Joker tries to kill him but is stopped by Batman. The Duo is unable to find the city, until another millionaire– Felix Lathrop–mentions the city. Batman and Robin follow the millionaire and are able to shut down the casion and Shadow City for good

Detective Comics #102 (August 1945): “The House That Was Held For Ransom”

  • Joker robs Bullion Stickney’s home (literally) and when Stickney returns home he receives a ransom note for the house. Bullion calls on Batman and Robin for help. The dynamic duo find clues of chimney bricks leading them to the house but are recived by a trap they barely escaped from. By following one of Stickney’s pigeon back to the house, Batman is able to apprehend the Joker.

World’s Finest #19 (Fall Issue 1945): “The League for Larceny!”

  • Collected in Batman: The World’s Finest Comics Archives vol. 2 (2004).
  • Stealing the Batmobile at one of his crimes, Joker decides to use it for his crimes. He then recruits the Velvet Kid, a ‘reformed crook’ who is really using his knowledge of buglar alarms for crime.  While organizing citizens committee against crime, Joker robs the member’s home.  Batman tries to stop him but falls into trap.  After escaping the trap, he captures the clown.

Batman #32 (July-August 1945): “Rackety-Rax Racket!”

  • Reprinted in Batman #257 (1974)
  • Joker’s new crime spree are inspired by college initation pranks. As Batman tries to intervene, he’s captured and Robin is forced to do humiliating initiation pranks to save him.  Eventually Batman frees himself and along with Robin, they defeat the Clown.

Detective Comics #109 (March 1946): “The House that Jokes Built”

  • As Joker stars another joke-inspired crime spree, the Dynamic Duo try to stop them but in the process, Robin is captured. Joker then leaves clues for Batman to follow but they lead to traps. Finally, after avoiding the traps, Batman finds the Joker’s house, but is captured.  Robins manages to free himself and save Batman and together, they recapture the Joker.

Detective Comics #114 (August 1946): “Acrostic of Crime!”

  • Joker challenges Batman with crimes inspired by the letter on his name. After following the first three crimes, Joker manages to escape and in the fourth, Joker captures Robin. As Joker gets ready to electrocute Robin, Batman arrives and with the Boy Wonder’s help both defeat the Joker, preventing him from spelling his name.

Batman #37 (October-November 1946): “The Joker Follows Suit!”

  • Collected in Batman in the Forties TPB
  • Joker creates his own version of Batman’s gadgets (Jokermobile, Joker signal, and Jokergyro helicopter) then sells his services to crooks who call for his help whith the Joker signal. Batman uses several Joker signals to force Joker out. He then follows him to his hideout, but falls in a trap. Joker steals the Batmobile and after escaping, Batman uses the Jokermobile to capture his enemy.

Detective Comics #118 (December 1946): “The Royal Flush Crimes!”

  • Collected in Batman Archives vol. 5 HC
  • Joker bases his latest crime spree in a royal flush, with each of his corresponding to the cards in the flush. Batman catches the pattern and is able to stop some of the robberies.  When Joker tries to escape, Batman rounds him up completing the royal flush at the Diamond X Dude Ranch owned by Ace Eddie Hoyle.

Batman #40 (April-May 1947): “The 13 Club!”

  • Bill Finger (w), Dick Sprang (p), Gene McDonald (i)
  • Joker decides to use the 13 club ( a group of men who disprove superstitions) as target of his crimes. Batman joins as the 13th member and tries to stop the Joker from using superstitions against the other membere. With the help of good luck superstitions, Batman defeats his enemy once more.

Detective Comics #124 (June 1947): “The Crime Parade”

  • Collected in Batman Archives vol. 6 HC
  • Joker’s new crime spree is based on the most requested song of the day in the radio. Batman figures out the pattern but is unable to stop the crimes and in one of them, Robin is kidnapped. Batman realizes then that Joker is fixing the song by mailing hundreds of request.  After following one of the thugs after mailing the letters he finds the hideout, falls into a trap, release Robin and escape to face his foe at another crime scene.  Joker is then arrested again and sent to prison.

Detective Comics #128 (October 1947): “Crimes in Reverse!”

  • Collected in Batman Archives vol. 6 HC
  • Joker decides to start a new spree based on reverse crimes. First he escapes prison by making the guards believing he had already escaped and then announces his crimes before commiting them. Batman is unable to stop the crimes until he figures out the Joker’s target is a gold shipment. The Duo set out a trap that though does not work as expected, still traps the Joker who is sent to prison again

Batman #44 (December 1947-January 1948): “Gamble with Doom!”

  • Joker is obsessed with gambling and kidnaps two radium thieves then take Batman and Robin to a trap. Then forces Batman to gamble for the lives of the theives and Robin but Batman defeats him at the games, forcing Joker to cheat on the last game ( in a giang roullette), but still loses. Fighting his enemy, Joker appears to fall to his death and saves the day.

Batman #46 (April-May 1948): “Guileful Greetings” or “The Joker Sends Regards!”

  • Joker decides to commit his latest crime spree using greeting cards, sending the first one to Batman with clues. On the fisrt robbery Joker defeats Batman using sneezing powder, and when they try to stop him from stealing some jewels, he manages to escape again. On his third crime, the Joker is finally apprehended and returned to prison.

Detective Comics #137 (July 1948): “The Rebus Crimes”

  • Collected in Batman Archives vol. 7 HC
  • A clever rebus sign on a local furrier’s store gives the Joker yet a new and novel method of committing his crimes! Joker manages to steal a treasury and a sapphire collection but escpaes before Batman can’t trap him. Once Batman figures the next crime is to steal a gold bullion from a plane,  he is able to catch the Joker by switching planes.

Detective Comics #138 (August 1948): “The Invisible Crimes!”

  • Collected in Batman Archives vol. 7 HC
  • The Joker follows up an article in the newspaper about a scientist discovering a lost elixir of invisibility and kidnaps the scientist that created it drinking the formula, becoming invisible and he becomes a real terror to Batman until the crime fighter takes some of the elixir himself. After a fight, Batman defeats Joker and sends him to prison.

Batman #49 (October-November 1948): “Batman’s Arabian Nights!”

  • When Bruce Wayne finds an ancient Arabian rug with a picture that resembles Joker he travels to the past and discover the Crier: a criminal that resembles the Joker but screams instead of laughing. Batman and Robin manage to apprehend the Crier and discover that the thief has a rug with his image in his possession.  This is the same rug at the auction.

Detective Comics #149 (July 1949): “The Sound Effect Crimes!”

  • The sound effects from a radio drama spur the Joker to institute a new crime idea: that of using sound to create panic among the city’s populace in order to make easy scores. Joker records Batman’s voice and plans to use it to panic the city but as he is ready to broadcast it on the radio, Batman (who had figured out his plan) is waiting for him at the station.

Batman #57 (February-March 1950): “The Funny Man Crimes!”
